Psalm 147:1-6
1 Praise the LORD! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant,[a] and a song of praise is fitting. 2 The LORD builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the outcasts of Israel. 3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. 4 He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names. 5 Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure. 6 The LORD lifts up the humble; he casts the wicked to the ground.
Watch the news, go to work, attend school, or sometimes even just wake up in your own home and evidence of The Fall of man is all around us. Good things and bad things happen to good people, bad people, and anyone in between. Situations occur that leave us wondering, “Why?” and asking the Lord for clarity. We often encounter circumstances where we feel confused, uncertain, or lost. Maybe we try to piece it all together, seeking understanding in our own strength.
The beauty of verse five is that it redirects us to God. His wisdom isn’t restricted by time, space, or circumstance. His understanding is limitless, boundless, and beyond our comprehension. We may not understand why certain things happen, but God does; He is omniscient, all-knowing. We can rest in this truth that a friend recently reminded me of: As a child of God, you were created on purpose for a purpose. And as Romans 8:28 reminds us, He is working all things out for the good of those who love Him. The Lord in His holiness can choose to act or wait upon the circumstances that occur within the world. After all, He created the world and everything in it! He has that ultimate authority.
