Romans 8:16-25
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
Imagine baking a cake (those of you less skilled in the baking world, just humor me a bit). You have combined all necessary ingredients, followed the proper baking instructions, and are mixing it all together. Already, the intoxicating smell of the cake-to-be wafts into the air with each turn of the spoon. It hasn’t yet gone to the oven, but you simply can’t wait to eat it. So, before pouring the mixture into the lightly sprayed pan, you sneak a quick try of the batter. Delicious! What an incredible taste of what’s to come when the cake is fully cooked, drowned in icing, and served with a giant glass of milk.
This life is filled with suffering. As children of God, we know these troubles are only temporary and the glory that awaits us in eternity is magnificent. Although this side of Heaven can be difficult, it can also present moments of joy and excitement, breathtaking experiences, and wonderful memories, especially with the Holy Spirit as our Guide––a taste of the glory to come! Even still, a “taste” of the batter is nothing compared to the final product. Passages like this help to remind us about our future as followers of Christ, filling us with hope and anticipation. It reminds us of the deep longing of both creation and Christian for redemption––a day when everything will be made new. And this future glory makes the present affliction seem insignificant in comparison. God’s plan for you is bigger and more enduring than your temporary struggles.
